    Mission

    Western Avenue Elementary school,

“where smart work makes the difference,” fosters a culture of high expectations for behavior and academics. We provide a stimulating environment to inspire children of all ability levels to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, capable communicators, technology literate, as well as global digital citizens. We foster teacher creativity, engage parents and the community as partners, and ultimately prepare students for college, career, leadership, and life.

    Vision

We, at Western Avenue Elementary school (WAES), will provide a safe, productive, culturally relevant, student centered, technology driven, standards based, and whole child teaching approach that will eliminate the access to opportunities gap and develop global learners.

    Smart Work Pays Off

Western Avenue Elementary School has been awarded the distinction of Reward School by the California Office to Reform Education, joining the ranks of only 54 other elementary schools in the entire state. The California Office to Reform Education is a collaboration among ten California School Districts working together to significantly improve student outcomes. LAUSD, along with school districts of Sacramento, San Francisco, and Long Beach, among others, operate under the principles of College and Career Readiness, Accountability and Support, as well as Effective Instruction and Leadership.

Having met the state API targets for the past three years (with scores steadily increasing from a mere 643 in 2011, to 739 in 2012 and 758 in 2013), Western Avenue has been a rising star in terms of student achievement. Our inclusion in the Reward School Category is brought about by our strong academic performance; combined with non-cognitive skills such as reduced absenteeism and low suspension/expulsion rates, sound Special Education identification and English Learner redesignation rates; and active student, staff, and community involvement.
